Calvary History
As God gives direction for heading the church, He gave to the founder Rev. A. R. Campbell a vision of his own for a faith dwelling he called Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 46 years ago. The founding fathers of Calvary were: Rev. B. J. Lewis, Rev. Reynolds, Rev. Hart, Rev. Johnson, and Rev. Simms.
Pastor Campbell received his commission to establish this sanctuary at this precise location at the precise time of appointment, February 21, 1971, and the birth of fellowship in this community generated and grew to be able to reach those who would come.
The legacy of Rev. Campbell and his works in the community is embedded in the hearts of those he touched along the way. As time passed, the pastor ship changed. Rev. Sims was appointed pastor of Calvary for one year following Rev. Campbell. Afterward, the church called Rev. Roberts as their pastor, and served as overseer for two years. Another pastor was called in 1991 to carry the charge of Calvary with the calling of our present pastor, Overseer M. L. Jefferson, Jr.
As we look at the church today, we see the continued growth in membership at Calvary. Yet, Calvary has room for those who have a sincere desire to serve God and make a difference. There is nothing too hard for God. We have seen God’s work in action as each ministry has increased with motivating individuals who are willing to thrust forward. Calvary’s music ministry is being magnified under the leadership of Sis. Effie Collins. Calvary has given birth to many other ministries to meet the needs of its members. The Mission, Men’s ministry, Deacon’s Ministry, Sunday school, Ushers, Women’s Ministry. Seniors Ministry, Prayer Ministry, Sick and Bereaved , the Young Adult Women’s Ministry, The Young Adult Men, The Theater Group, Praise dance, The Children’s Church, The New Member Orientation Ministry, The evangelistic Ministry, and The Mentor Men’s Ministry (Men of Valor).
In July 2001 Pastor Jefferson was given a vision for Calvary, and he passed it on the church. In order for the church facility to meet the needs of our growing congregation, the pastor was given a vision for a new worship center to be built. By God’s Grace, we began our worship services in the new sanctuary in March 2012. The vision has been another testimony for us, and it proves that God is still doing extraordinary things with people who have faith in Him and have willing minds to work. “TO GOD BE THE GLORY”
